Espanglish & Spanglish
This post was originally posted March the 3rd of 2005. But in order to celebrate the fact Espanglish has made into the DRAE we reprint it again with some slight modifications in orthography that I missed back then.
One must be careful about las variantes de Spanglish que hay. There is lo que I call Spanglish and Espanglish (otherwise known as border lingo). El Spanglish es un phenomenon que se da en Los, (USA); el Espanglish in the 3000 kilómetros long border, el norte, las fronteras de México.
Spanglish, I have said en different ocasiones, is more like the cosas we used to say with nuestros amigos and the like. La people se impresionaba de our modo de talk, code-switch era la word que abrió el path para toda una culture que poco by little se afirmaba. We, los suit suiters, los cholos, pachucos y all ese talk of low class chican@s lo speakeabamos y después se hizo un badge de honor. It was our lengua and it still is, de hecho, it is so new it hasn’t even finished being popular. Hay unos pockets de resistencia here and allá pero son considered como ignorantes savants. Mas el Spanglish de Los se difiere markedly con el Espanglish del mexican border, como en pueblos like mine, Tijuana. Hay Xican@s of generations and then there is Xican@s like me who are first generation pero que aprendieron el English right away como un native. Then there are los immigrantes. Xican@s employ muchas veces, code-switch and calo, slang proper to our cultura pero como we can’t detach ourselves de nuestros parents we also pick up los language efforts que hacen nuestros fathers and madres to adapt to la new culture. They speak and add a new variant to the English language with a Spanish twist to it, that is, they speak English with a Mexican accent. It is from those sectores que el Spanglish feeds itself as well, son palabras que ellos use in Spanish pero que son words in English con intonación castellana. There are other more tecnical terms to differenciate estos fenómenos in Spanglish pero así lo vamos a leave por este time. También notice that Spanglish es un giro que se le da a la lengua inglesa using Spanish fonética, pero when we Xican@s pronunciamos, por example, wacha, we tend to use the English fonology rather than the one in Spanish. Como sabemos hablar inglés las palabras que tenemos en común are pronunciadas correctly in English though they may have a Spanish twist to them.
El Espanglish es un phenomenomen que da in border towns. Son words que nos llegan from Los and that had no traducciones directas to it in Spanish, por alguna reason u la other. Así que la people se have apropiated it of them y las usan para sí. Palabras like troca, brekear, mofle, birria, daime, nickle, cora, vaipin, sueter, zipper, batear, cachear, pichar, and many other that postearee later offer una gama diferente al Spanglish inclusive al pronunciarlas. There are also incursiones sintácticas del English al Spanish already in the Spanish population del border.
Pero la mayor diferencia yace en la pronunciación ya que los Spanglish speakers de Los, pronounce them more like English y en Tijuana, por ejemplo, pronuncian las palabras del Espanglish, con la fonología del castellano. Un ejemplo:
Recientemente se observó en un post del íngel que Likear es un homógrafo en Tijuana pero eso no posible en Los, Califas pues.
En Tijuana se da la variante de Likear [to look] (wachar), Likear (de gustar=like) y Likea (likear=gotearse)
Pero en Los la pronunciación a likear se apróxima más a la verdadera pronunciación de su raíz, o sea look, lookear se oiría posiblemente así en castellano: /lukear/; Likea, de gustar, se escucharía /laykea/, likea, de gotearse, es la única de las tres variantes que mantiene una pronunciación fiel al español y al inglés.
