LA MUERTE EN LA POESíA NÁHUATL

¿HAY ALGO MÁS ALLÁ DE LA MUERTE?

Abandonados con la tristeza,
quedamos aquí­ en la tierra.
¿En dónde está el camino
que lleva a la región de los muertos,
al lugar de nuestro descenso
al paí­s de los descarnados?

¿Acaso en verdad se vive,
allí­ adonde todos vamos?
¿Acaso lo cree tu corazón?
Él nos esconde
en un arca, en un cofre,
el Dador de la Vida,
el que amortaja a la gente.
¿Acaso allí­ podré contemplar,
podré ver el rostro
de mi madre, de mi padre?

¿Se me darán en préstamos allí­
algunos cantos, algunas palabras?
Allí­ tendré que bajar,
nada espero:
nos dejaron,
acompañados con la tristeza.

LA MUERTE COMO ESPERANZA

En verdad lo digo:
ciertamente no es el lugar de la felicidad
aquí­ la tierra.
Ciertamente hay que ir a otra parte:
allá la felicidad sí­ existe.
¿O es que sólo en vano venimos a la tierra?
Otro es el sitio de la vida.
Allá quiero ir,
allá en verdad cantaré
con las más bellas aves.
Allá disfrutaré
de las genuinas flores,
de las flores que alegran,
las que apaciguan al corazón,
las únicas que dan paz a los hombres,
las que los embriagan con alegrí­a…
